Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Our guide will pick you from the airport in Kigali to brief you a bit about the trip and drive you to the hotel to refresh after a long flight. Dinner and overnight will be at the Hotel in Kigali city.

Day 2: City Tour-Volcanoes National Park

After a tasty breakfast, you will head out for a city tour to the Genocide memorial grounds where hundreds of innocent lives people were buried. The site exhibits the ugly history of the 1994 genocide and how the Rwandan society has overcome the bad memories. Videos, audios and crafts at this site will be there to help you understand more about this tragic incident. You will have your lunch in the city and then embark on a 2-3 hours’ journey to the north towards Volcanoes National Park arriving in the evening hours. Check in at the lodge, have dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Gorilla Tracking

Start your day with a heavy breakfast at the lodge, you will drive to the park briefing point to be guided on the dos and don’ts of tracking the Gorillas. You will then be put into groups of 8 and be led into the forest to search for the habituated mountain Gorillas. After several hours of trekking through the thick undergrowth in the high mountains, you will meet the Gorilla family and be allowed to be with them for one full hour. The gorillas have been habituated and are safe for tracking without causing any trouble to the visitors as long as you follow the guidelines. The whole exercise may take you over 3 hours to half a day since it’s a jungle and the gorillas keep moving. After this exciting adventure, you will be led to the point where you started and be joined with your driver/guide to go to your lodge for lunch. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 4: Golden Monkey tracking

After an early breakfast on this day, you will head to the briefing area to be guided on how to go about tracking the golden monkeys. The rangers will then lead you to the high volcano mountains to search for the golden monkeys and upon meet the family/group, you will have a full hour encounter with them learning more about their behavior. The Golden monkeys share the same habitat with the Gorillas and tracking them is more/less the same as for Gorillas. After watching these rare apes will return to the starting point and drive off with your guide and drive to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, you will set off from your lodge at Volcanoes National Park to Nyungwe forest National park the home of the chimps. The park is one of Africa’s oldest tropical rainforests and is home to over 13 different primate species and 300 bird species some of which are endemic to the Albertine rift valley. You will drive through the countryside to this park with stopovers at the different attractions and lunch. Proceed to Nyungwe forest until you arrive at the lodge in the evening hours.

6: Chimpanzee tracking

Breakfast is served very early to allow you to travel to the park offices early enough to catchup with the activities at the starting point. You will be briefed, divided into groups of 8 and allocated a Gorilla group to track. You will then be led into the forest in search for habituated Gorillas which you will meet after several hours hiking into the forest their natural home. The Gorillas are used to the presence of humans and this should make you comfortable to track them without fear. You must however remain in line with the tracking rules because, even when the Gorillas are habituated, they remain wild. You will be given an hour of interaction with these forest giants as you get deeper knowledge into their nature in the forest. You will later return to meet your guide at the starting point and get on the road to your lodge. Relax at the lodge that evening, have your dinner and spend the night.

Day 7: Canopy walk and return to Kigali

The day begins with a tasty breakfast at the lodge and head straight to the starting point of the canopy in Nyungwe forest National Park. After a short briefing, you will get onto this 200 meter suspended walk way 60 meters above Nyungwe forest. The canopy was made to cater for the comfort of the participants of all kinds including those with fear for heights. Enjoy scenic views of the park and the landscape around this park, you will also enjoy watching primates down at the park as you walk on the tree tops on a canopy. Many bird species are seen jumping around the park. After this wonderful experience, you will join your driver/guide and check out of the lodge before setting off for Kigali to catch your last flight.
